SA U18 Sevens teams selected for Youth Festival

The future of South African Sevens rugby will be on show in Sydney next week when two Under-18 teams for men and women, consisting of 12 players each, will take part in the annual Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) on 18 and 19 January.

It’s the first time ever that a South African U18 women’s team will play abroad, with Sevens making its debut at the AYOF after the sport was included in the Olympic Games for 2016.

A total of 30 nations will take part in 17 sporting codes utilising most of the venues used during the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.

The men’s side will be coached by former Springbok Sevens captain Neil Powell, with the current SARU Manager of the SA Sevens Academy and Elite Player Development...

Junior Springbok training squad named

South Africa Under-20 head coach Dawie Theron on Monday named 34 players for the latest training camp in preparation for the IRB Junior World Championships to be played in France in June. The Junior Springboks will defend the title won in South Africa last year.

The camp, to be held in Stellenbosch between 14 and 27 January, will include trials and friendly matches against the Universities of the Western Cape (UWC), Stellenbosch (Maties) and Cape Town (Ikeys).

Kearsney College Easter Festival Fixtures for 2013

The Kearsney College Easter Festival of 2013 will see three new attendees in Outeniqua HS (George), Boland Landbou and Framesby (Port Elizabeth). The big guns at the tournament will be Grey College (Bloemfontein), Paarl Gimnasium and Paul Roos Gimnasium (Stellenbosch).

Steve Botha heads for UAE

Steve Botha, master in charge of rugby at Maritzburg College, is to leave College for a post in the United Arab Emirates.

Botha will be based in Abu Dhabi. Ryan Strudwick continues as director of rugby.

The post was offered to Botha to run the Sharks Academy in Abu Dhabi, a partnership  between the UAE and the Sharks in an attempt to improve rugby in the UAE which tends to lose players in the 18-25 age group. Botha is to take charge of the Under-15 and Under-18 High Performance squads to...
