What an interesting season!
And we believe we are still in for quite a ride before a First XV can lay claim to being the top rugby playing team in South Africa for 2022.
For the third time this season we have a new number one with the Hoërskool Garsfontein of Pretoria claiming the top position thanks to the fact that the team is still unbeaten in 2022 with impressive historic victories over Affies (20-19) and Paul Roos Gimnasium (21-18) so far in the season.
The only small blemish thus far on their record was a 19-all draw against Paarl Boys' High during Noord/Suid. Garsies only have their matches within the Noordvaal Trophy left which could hinder them from ending the season in the top position.
A few surprises in other matches might however play in favour of the side from the Jacaranda City.
Second-placed Bishops is also still unbeaten and breathing in the necks of Garsies. The team from Cape Town however still has to play the Boland trio of Paarl Gimnasium, Paarl Boys' High, and Boland Landbou.
They have drawn 36-all against Paul Roos Gimnasium which could've been a second successive victory over the team of the Eikestad if not for s superb comeback from the Maroon Machine.
Talking about the Maroon Machine - they have really opened the season by securing a last-gasp victory over Paarl Gimnasium (26-24) over the weekend during their Premier Interschools thanks to a intercept try by Jurenzo Julius.
Gimnasium managed to end Grey College's unbeaten streak by securing a 22-17 victory during the final match of Wildeklawer in Kimberley. Grey is currently occupying the third spot due to this defeat. They have also drawn 17-all against Oakdale Landbou earlier in the season.
Just how crazy is the 2022 season?
Oakdale Landbou who have drawn against the third-placed side is not cracking a spot in our Top 30 at the moment. They will face Stellenberg this weekend at home with which they could move into the Top 30 for next week.
There are some much-anticipated games over the next three weeks that could settle and even decide who will be the top school's side for 2022. Paarl Boys' High travels to Bloemfontein to face Grey College. Boishaai is currently in the eighth position with only the draw against Garsies and a defeat against seventh-placed, Rondebosch Boys' High, keeping them out of the Top 5.
King Edward VII (5) have also only suffered one defeat, but will be be truly tested by Affies (6) over the weekend. The Wit Bulle has also only suffered one the defeat, the one against Garsies.
The Red Army's only defeat came at the hands of Grey High School. Paarl Gimnasium faces Rondebosch Boys' High over the weekend which could also have a huge impact on the rankings, while the match in two-weeks time between Affies and Grey College's result will also have a huge impact.
nto consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.
These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility for reporting on school rugby very seriously.
