A dramatic 19-17 win for Glenwood against Maritzburg College at Maritzburg (halftime: Maritzburg College 0-3 Glenwood) when Layron Millborrow slotted an injury-time penalty to steal the win at the end in the Premier Interschools encounter on Saturday 11 September.
Despite a stellar second half shift by Maritzburg College they could not do enough to repeat last week's victory after trailing for most of the match, it was the very Millborrow's kicking prowess that kept the Glenwood side in front for the entire first half, in fact, he was the only one to score in the opening stanza.
This would have been College's second win in as many weeks after they beat Glenwood 20-12, a week ago at Goldstones, last week's emphatic win being the first time they beat rivals Glenwood since their 35-16 back in June 2010. But it was Glenwood who got one better in this week's Premier Interschools match.
Critical and unforced errors from Glenwood in the second half, allowed College to put the pressure on their opposition and take play deep into the half of Glenwood. College was the first to cross the whitewash when Mdanda and Radu dotted down while Glenwood's first and only try came deep in the second half via Ghanyane.
Not much was on offer in the first half with both sides making crucial errors, not getting quality first phase ball to their respective talented backline players, but the team, Glenwood, who in the end made the least amount of errors and won all their lineouts and scrums, came out top.
A rather lacklustre first-half performance from both sides meant few scoring opportunities were created by either. The visitors got the first points and maintained the lead through regular penalty conversions via Millborrow.
Mdanda's first score came around ten minutes into the second half when College was enjoying not only most of the possession but territory as well. Scrumhalf Els making some good playmaking decisions allowing players like Supaquick Man of the Match, Ngcobo to run with ease and so much freedom.
College collected the ball in broken play and fed the ball to their skilful backline players and with Radu out on the wing, despite nearly fumbling the ball and losing it forward, the speedster managed to gather it and canter in for the second try and at this point, less than 15 minutes to go, College looked set to claim a second consecutive win, Els added the extras, 14-9, and handed them the lead for the first time in the match.
Ghanyane's converted try swung the momentum back in the favour of Glenwood but a late penalty conversion from Els set up a dramatic finish for this derby, 17-16 with less than five minutes to play.
Unforced errors nearly cost Glenwood in the end, but it was their resilience on the defence that kept the visitors in the game despite conceding two late second-half tries and a penalty via the boot of number nine Els.
With two minutes to go, Glenwood launched attack after attack and marched upfield towards the College try line, a penalty inside College's half, with time up on the clock, meant Millborrow could steal the win right at the end for Glenwood, and he did so.
The entire Glenwood team embraced each other and stood behind, metaphorically and physically, their flyhalf, as Millborrow lined up his sixth attempt, missing only one earlier in the second half, he slotted it calmly much as Morne Steyn did against the British & Irish Lions in 2009 and again in 2021.
Glenwood celebrated as the College players looked on, they will have to wait another year before they can avenge this heartbreaking defeat.
