Helpmekaar Kollege was founded in 1921 as the first Afrikaans high school in Johannesburg. In 1992 the school became a private school.

Helpies was crowned champions of the Transvaal's Administrator's Cup in 1938, 1962 and 1975 as well as the Beeld Trophy for Big Schools in 2015 and 2016.

Helpmekaar produced two Springboks in Franz van der Ryst (1951) and Thys Burger (1980). Van der Ryst toured the British Isles with the Springboks in their tour of 1951/52. He played in 14 tour matches, but never managed to get a test cap. Burger has the unique distinction of helping to erect the rugby poles, helping out as touch judge as well as getting some game time from the bench and scoring a try in a test match when the Springboks played the USA in 1981. Surely a record no-one will ever surpass.

SA Schools' winger Deon Coetzee represented Transvaal on the rugby field, but later also made a name for himself as an actor in South African soaps like Agter Elke Man, Egoli and 7de Laan.
